Life lessons you learn from snowboarding

Once upon a time, a young explorer found himself stuck on the top of a big, fuck off, icy mountain…

With no hope of getting saved, he had two options; die in the cold, or strap a couple of pieces of driftwood to his feet and try to slide down.

When he finally got to the bottom he realised that, even though he was bruised and cold, he’d survived… And actually, that was fun. And so skiing was born. Or at least I assume that’s how it happened. Of course, a few years later people realised a board was better than skis and so was the birth of snowboarding.

Anyway, one thing I’ve learned since I started snowboarding is that life and that big fuck off mountain aren’t all that different; is that you can either give up, or face the shitstorm and try to have some fun.

So bear with me while I get motivational as fuck on you all….

If you think you’re going to fall, you’re going to fall

Snowboarding is 20% skill and 80% conviction. Brass-necked, absolutely cheeky as shit self-assurance that you can do this. I guarantee if you think you’re going to end up on your arse, you will – without a doubt – land on your arse.

The same goes for life though; if you think you can do something… well I’m not going to lie to your face and say you’ll be able to do it… if you want a fucking inspirational quote you know where Pinterest is. But what I will say is this; if you think you can do something you’re giving yourself a 100% better chance at succeeding than if you don’t. If you’re not going to believe in yourself, then who else is?

If you shit out you’re going to fall too

Whether it’s a backside 360 or asking that girl you fancy out, if you shit out at the last minute you’re going to fall on your ass. Hard. Whether it’s snowboarding or life, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Commit or go home, simple as that.

Don’t let a win go to your head or a loss to your heart.

Snowboarding is all about conviction, but it’s easy to get arrogant when you’re smashing it. But, as with anything, with a turn of the heel things can change. One minute you’re on fire, the next your face first in the snow. The important thing is to roll with the punches; take the highs with the lows and don’t give up.

Learn from your mistakes, pick your self up and get back out there!

Always have a bit more fun than you’re meant to

Life isn’t always going to be smooth sailing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the best of it. Get messy, fall over, laugh about it, get back up. As Hunter S. Thompson said; “anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.” So step out of your comfort zone; whether it’s flying down the side of a mountain or trying something new, find the fun in life, because nobody is going to do it for you.

So in summary:

Here’s your fucking permanent horoscope: every day is what you make of it. Either bend over, or be bend over. It’s your choice.

Also, go snowboarding – you’ll love it.

Until next time… x
